Me, my family and our TV

I live with my husband and our three children, 5, 7 and 9 years old. If I compare with other families I think we are a little bit odd. We have just one TV and it isn’t big and it isn’t a flat screen… My children are allowed to watch TV or film about one hour a day. Sometimes they complain and want to watch more but they have got used to the hour so mostly they are satisfied with that. Me and my husband are quite strict about what programs or films our children watch on TV. They can choose between Bolibompa, different animal- or music programs.

As often I can I sit with my children when they watch TV. I really think there are many good programs for children on Bolibompa. Favourites are for example “Sagoberättaren”, “Wild kids”, “Myror i brallan”, “Alba and Adam” (about relationship) and different programs about children from other countries. I like programs that learn something about life or stimulate their imagination or just make them laugh! I’m not so fond of new American cartoons. I think that most of the language and the story in some of them, suits better for adults.

I don’t spend much time with my TV; I have so many other things I want to do. Most of the little time I spend with my TV is with my children, so I mostly look at programs for children… But as I mentioned many of those programs are really good. If I have the time to look at something I can choose all by myself, it will be a dramafilm, something about sport or an English detective story. I don’t like those American actions with a hero who never dies; they are often so affected and unbelievable.

For some days ago I watched a very nice film, one of the best I have seen for a long time. It was a Danish drama, “After the wedding”. First-class actors, excellent pictures and a good story gave me a fantastic experience. In fact I was so affected I couldn’t sleep for a long time that night… The film was about true life and family relations. It showed “real” people( to compare with American actions…) with much feeling and both happiness and sadness.(most sadness…) I like films like that. Maybe I’m fond of it because it gives me thoughts about my own life, makes me feel grateful for the life I live.

My children aren’t so old yet. It will be interesting to see in future if we can keep one hour a day and if it’s possible to only have one TV in a family of five. Maybe, as my children get older, my time with the TV will increase also…

  1. Hello Ewa

My first reaction to what you have written is YES, WOW, FINALLY! I think parents like you and your husband taking the adult responsibility is rare. It feels great to hear that you, threw your actions, have found a way that works for you and your kids. But as you say it will be interesting to see how it is going to work when they get older....

I think that your paragraphs are well done, not to long and not to short and containing one unit of thought. You have a clear train of thought threw the whole thing. When it comes to the transitional devices you use e.g. pronouns, and I find them correct. Maybe you should try to use the other basic types just to practice. I found some grammatical errors that you wrote: I like programs that learn but it should be I like programs that teach you something or I like programs that are educating. The word learn is always referred to the person learning, receiving the knowledge. When you are writing about you watching TV I think the correct way to say is I don’t spend much time in front of the TV. Drop the For and just write some days ago I watched....

I just want to say that I liked reading what you had written and finally you are role model for other parents, so GO Ewa!

    Best,
    Anna

  2. Hi there Ewa,
I really enjoyed reading your blog, it made me think about the routines and rules we have in my family. My son is also allowed an hour a day but there are often discussions about that. My husband has a tendency not to be as strict as me, and that can cause discussions as well... It´s very interesting what you write - I think I will let my husband read it too!
Your English is very good, and your text is very well structured and easy to read. The vocabulary is varied and your paragraphing correct as far as I can tell!
Finally, I agree with what you´re saying about After the wedding - it is fantastic and Mads Mikkelsen is great! ( The other actors too, of course). The Danish know how to make good TV series!!
    See you in Karlstad, Ewa!
